First Sony’s Spider-Man joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe, now the X-Men? What’s the world coming to? Well according to Hugh Jackman, the possibility of having the X-Men crossover with the Avengers can become a very true situation, and what he says does sound plausible.
“I’m surprised by what’s happened with Spider-Man joining. You’re in a very complex world where big, big sums of money are being spent for different franchises and so getting them together is difficult.
Two years ago I’d have said you’d be a real optimist to think it’d ever happen, but weirdly now I just think it maybe could. I think there is the possibility that it will happen.”
Now don’t start jumping up and down in happiness just yet. I don’t want to pour salt into anyone’s coffee, but just because Sony and Marvel Studios were able to come to an agreement with each other, it doesn’t mean that 2oth Century Fox is suddenly buddy-buddy with everyone.
The Marvel Studios and Fox drama isn’t going to all go away in a blink of an eye, despite what Hugh Jackman might want to believe. When meetings with Marvel Studios and Fox broke down to re-acquire some of their rights, Fox wouldn’t budge. We can all speculate how that meeting spiraled into because shortly after that, Marvel started cancelling their mutant titles and all Fantastic Four titles.
“You know, I think as an optimist I would love it,” he said. “That’s the best thing about comic books; you can just pitch these characters into each other.”
Sounds like Hugh Jackman’s got a good mindset though. If he’s still optimistic about this, I say let’s all hope and pray that both companies can come to an agreement. Or at least have the MCU lease the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters, with Marvel Studios’ own actors in the MCU. I’d prefer it if the mutants didn’t have anything to do with Fox’s “Cinematic Universe”.
