The great thing about Marvel comic books is that you can cram as many characters and as many teams as possible into one epic story. All of the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four are Marvel creations and have the possibility to be in the same Marvel comic book product at the same time. But with various movie studios having rights to various Marvel characters, this isn’t the case when it comes to films.
Obviously, fans want to see the same character crossovers they can see in the comic books. The idea of Spider-Man co-existing with the Avengers on screen was a popular one, and seemed impossible until recently, when Marvel Studios and Sony worked out a deal to have the character appear in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. That was a rough process, in itself, so the thought of having the X-Men and Avengers in the same movie may seem downright impossible. However, it could be on the horizon, as Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox might be in “early talks” to bring their characters together.
“I’ve heard from a few of my sources, my little birds, that Fox and Marvel have kind of talked, but not really, but there’s interest from Fox,” Fatman on Batman podcast producer Matt Key told Collider. “We’re years from that ever possibly happening, but I think that’s what it would take, is Fox joining hands with Marvel” to bring the franchises together.
It seems that the idea is on the table, but it might not happen for a while. Complicating the matter is the fact that many of the actors in the current movie franchises are getting older, and many have or will move on, specifically Hugh Jackman, who’s retiring his portrayal of Wolverine. As well, Marvel Studios has their movie line-up mapped out for the next five years or so, so it might be difficult finding a place for this ambitious crossover.
For now, though, you can still enjoy your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man swinging around with the Avengers in theaters, or see all your favorite Marvel super heroes beat each other up in Civil War II, this Summer’s giant comic book event.
